Dr. Phillips Center E-Update

Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts
e-Update March 24, 2011

Good afternoon!  We have created this quick update to help keep you abreast of what’s happening at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. As always, we welcome your feedback and thank you for your continued support.

·         We are happy to announce a new $1 million gift from Michael and Deborah Sciarrino of Winter Park. The Sciarrinos’ gift will support the Center’s endowment. Read the press release and some of the media coverage:

·         The first meeting of the Orlando Community Construction Corporation (OCCC) was held last Thursday. Formed by unanimous vote at our February 24 Board of Directors’ meeting, the OCCC will oversee the project’s construction, reporting monthly to the Center’s Board of Directors. The OCCC has issued a Request for Qualifications to provide owner’s representative services. The Dr. Phillips Center team continues to be responsible for the capital, endowment and annual fundraising campaigns; community engagement; education initiatives; pre-opening operations; and facility and program operations once the building is opened.

·         Excerpts from our February 24 press conference can be found here.

·         Orlando native Annette Neel has been elected to our Board of Directors. Annette has long supported the arts in Central Florida. In 1958 she served as chair of the steering committee which established Orlando Opera. She credits her parents with instilling in her a love for the arts, and in 2009 she pledged $1 million to the Center in honor of them.

·         Center Board members Joe Cleveland, former chief information officer for Lockheed Martin, and Representative Geraldine Thompson are hosting a meeting of the Central Florida chapter of Sigma Pi Phi in our model room. Sigma Pi Phi is the first African American Greek-lettered fraternity. Joe and Geraldine have also invited leaders of other African American organizations to hear the Dr. Phillips Center story, hoping to get other groups knowledgeable, energized and involved in our history-making project.
·         Check out the Center in the newest issue of Orange Appeal magazine.  Founderpublisher and Circle member, Christi Ashby, donated space in the current issue in support of the Center: "imagined by dreamers, created by believers, built by you."
·         Circle member, Jarritt Sheel, introduced us to the WUCF FM 89.9 team this week. Lots of possibilities there to engage the station.  As always, if you have anyone you’d like to introduce us to, please let us know!

·         Circle member, Mickey Barkett, and her husband, David, are hosting a neighborhood happy hour on Friday, April 1, to help spread the word about the project.

·         We received the following media coverage in the past week:

Spring groundbreaking for arts center in doubt

Many firms vying to lead arts center construction

Orlando races to build arts center that promises to be money pit

·         Save the date! Our next Board meeting will be held Thursday, April 7, 2 pm, at our offices. This meeting is open to the public; we encourage you to attend. RSVP
