Dr. Phillips Center E-Update

Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts
e-Update March 24, 2011

Good afternoon!  We have created this quick update to help keep you abreast of what’s happening at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. As always, we welcome your feedback and thank you for your continued support.

·         We are happy to announce a new $1 million gift from Michael and Deborah Sciarrino of Winter Park. The Sciarrinos’ gift will support the Center’s endowment. Read the press release and some of the media coverage:

·         The first meeting of the Orlando Community Construction Corporation (OCCC) was held last Thursday. Formed by unanimous vote at our February 24 Board of Directors’ meeting, the OCCC will oversee the project’s construction, reporting monthly to the Center’s Board of Directors. The OCCC has issued a Request for Qualifications to provide owner’s representative services. The Dr. Phillips Center team continues to be responsible for the capital, endowment and annual fundraising campaigns; community engagement; education initiatives; pre-opening operations; and facility and program operations once the building is opened.

·         Excerpts from our February 24 press conference can be found here.

·         Orlando native Annette Neel has been elected to our Board of Directors. Annette has long supported the arts in Central Florida. In 1958 she served as chair of the steering committee which established Orlando Opera. She credits her parents with instilling in her a love for the arts, and in 2009 she pledged $1 million to the Center in honor of them.

·         Center Board members Joe Cleveland, former chief information officer for Lockheed Martin, and Representative Geraldine Thompson are hosting a meeting of the Central Florida chapter of Sigma Pi Phi in our model room. Sigma Pi Phi is the first African American Greek-lettered fraternity. Joe and Geraldine have also invited leaders of other African American organizations to hear the Dr. Phillips Center story, hoping to get other groups knowledgeable, energized and involved in our history-making project.
·         Check out the Center in the newest issue of Orange Appeal magazine.  Founderpublisher and Circle member, Christi Ashby, donated space in the current issue in support of the Center: "imagined by dreamers, created by believers, built by you."
·         Circle member, Jarritt Sheel, introduced us to the WUCF FM 89.9 team this week. Lots of possibilities there to engage the station.  As always, if you have anyone you’d like to introduce us to, please let us know!

·         Circle member, Mickey Barkett, and her husband, David, are hosting a neighborhood happy hour on Friday, April 1, to help spread the word about the project.

·         We received the following media coverage in the past week:

Spring groundbreaking for arts center in doubt

Many firms vying to lead arts center construction

Orlando races to build arts center that promises to be money pit

·         Save the date! Our next Board meeting will be held Thursday, April 7, 2 pm, at our offices. This meeting is open to the public; we encourage you to attend. RSVP

·         Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook. Have your friends do the same!

Dr. Phillips Center Announces New $1 Million Gift

ORLANDO, Fla. – March 23, 2011 – The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts has received another major gift.  Winter Park residents, Michael and Deborah Sciarrino, have pledged $1 million toward the project’s endowment.

The gift represents the Sciarrino’s support for the arts and specifically, the community programming the mission-driven Center will offer.

According to Dr. Phillips Center Board Chairman Jim Pugh, “This project has received enormous support.  We thank the Sciarrino’s for their belief in this project and their commitment to the many ways it will engage the Central Florida community.”

“The outpouring of support this year alone is an amazing testament to the faith our community has in this project,” added Dr. Phillips Center President Kathy Ramsberger.  “We are so grateful to the Sciarrino’s for investing in our future so generously.”

In addition to her work with the Mennello Museum, Deborah is a passionate board member of Central Florida’s Foundation for Success, which provides personal development, financial support, mentorship and friendship for disadvantaged young women pursuing a college education.  She considers her support for the Dr. Phillips Center to be investments in the future of young women like those she supports through Foundation for Success, because of the Center’s mission-driven focus on community programming.

“I think it is important for young people like the women I work with to be able to experience the arts and to be a part of the type of community outreach the Center will facilitate,” said Deborah Sciarrino. “We need institutions to support causes like this and I am confident the Dr. Phillips Center will play an integral role in helping build our community and transforming young lives through its community outreach.”

“Performing arts centers nationwide enhance the quality of life of their regions,” Ramsberger said. “As a mission-driven Center, our commitment is to positively impact the patron experience on and off the stage.  It is through the generosity of donors like Michael and Deborah that we will be able to offer critical community programming and be more than just a building, but a local institution.”

The Sciarrino gift is the second endowment pledge in two months.  The project currently exceeds $90 million in philanthropic commitments.

About this Project

The Dillard Center for the Arts Jazz Ensemble, a performance oriented big band composed of talented student musicians, needs your help to attend the super bowl of all high school jazz band competitions, Essentially Ellington. EE is part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center program, headed by Wynton Marsalis in New York City. Last year, DCA Jazz qualified for the first time and placed 2nd nationally.

This year we've been invited back and are determined to come home with a 1st Place. But it's not just about winning for our group of very dedicated students. We will also get hands-on help and make one-on-one contact with members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, who are world class musicians.

DCA Jazz is part of the Performing Arts magnet program at Dillard High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. and attracts talented students from all over Broward County. Magnet programs typically exist at schools which are under-enrolled, and under-funded. As talented as our students are, many simply cannot afford the cost of the four-day trip to NYC. Your donation will help our students with all their travel expenses.

As a result of the exposure that individual students received at the event last year, many have received terrific opportunities, such as scholarship offers for summer music camps and tuition offers from music schools, all of which will help them to pursue their dreams in music. For all these reasons, let's help these guys and girls get to New York, and the "House of Swing!"

*Note: Donations will go to the Dillard Center for the Arts Instrumental Music Friends, a 501(c)(3) parent organization that supports the DCA Jazz Band.
